Quick Fixes for Slow Performance
If FileJoy feels sluggish or unresponsive, try these solutions in order. Most performance issues can be resolved in just a few minutes.
Check Your Internet Connection
A slow or unstable internet connection is the most common cause of performance issues.
- Run a speed test at [speedtest.net](https://www.speedtest.net) — you need at least **5 Mbps download** for a smooth experience
- If you're on Wi-Fi, try moving closer to your router or switching to a wired connection
- If your connection is slow, wait for it to stabilize or try again later
Clear Your Browser Cache
Over time, your browser accumulates cached data that can slow things down:
- Open **Settings** in your browser
- Go to **Privacy** or **Clear Browsing Data**
- Select **Cached images and files**
- Click **Clear Data**
- Reload FileJoy
This forces your browser to download fresh files and often resolves sluggishness.
Reduce Open Tabs
Having too many open tabs can consume your computer's memory and slow down everything, including FileJoy.
- Close tabs you're not actively using
- Aim for **fewer than 15 open tabs** for the best performance
- Consider using a tab manager extension if you tend to keep many tabs open
Try a Different Browser
If FileJoy is slow in your current browser, try switching to another one. Google Chrome generally offers the best performance with FileJoy, but Firefox and Edge are also excellent choices.
Large Document Uploads
If the app slows down specifically during or after uploading documents:
- **Large files take longer to process** — PDFs over 5MB or high-resolution images may need extra time for AI scanning
- Wait for the upload and processing to complete before continuing to use the app
- If you're uploading many files at once, the processing queue may take several minutes
- Avoid uploading files larger than **10MB** (the maximum allowed)
Device Performance
Sometimes the issue is your device, not FileJoy:
- **Restart your computer** — this clears temporary files and frees up memory
- **Close other applications** — especially resource-heavy apps like video editors or games
- **Check your available memory** — if your system is using more than 90% of RAM, performance will suffer
Still Slow?
If you've tried everything above and FileJoy is still slow:
- Check our **status page** to see if there's a known outage or performance issue
- Try accessing FileJoy at a different time — peak tax season can cause higher server loads
- Contact **support@filejoy.com** and let us know:
- What browser and device you're using
- When the slowness started
- Which specific actions feel slow
We'll investigate and get things running smoothly for you.
