Document upload failed

Why Uploads Fail

Document uploads can fail for several reasons. The good news is that most issues are easy to fix.

File Too Large

FileJoy has a maximum file size of 10MB per file. If your file exceeds this limit:

How to Fix It

  • **Compress the image:** Use a free tool like TinyPNG or your phone's image editor to reduce the file size
  • **Reduce resolution:** If it's a photo, reduce the image resolution slightly (1200–1600 pixels wide is usually sufficient for readable scans)
  • **Split PDFs:** If you have a large multi-page PDF, split it into smaller files using a free PDF splitter tool
  • **Re-save as PDF:** Open the image and "Print to PDF"—this often creates a smaller file

Unsupported File Format

FileJoy accepts PDF, PNG, JPG/JPEG, and CSV files only.

How to Fix It

  • **HEIC files (iPhone):** iPhones sometimes save photos in HEIC format. Change your camera settings to "Most Compatible" (JPEG), or convert the file before uploading
  • **TIFF or BMP:** Convert to PNG or JPG using any image editor or online converter
  • **Word documents:** Save or export as PDF first
  • **Zip files:** Extract the files and upload individually

Network Issues

If your upload starts but never completes, or you see a "Network error" message:

How to Fix It

  • **Check your internet connection:** Try loading another website to verify
  • **Switch networks:** If you're on WiFi, try mobile data (or vice versa)
  • **Disable VPN:** VPNs can sometimes interfere with file uploads
  • **Wait and retry:** Temporary server issues resolve on their own—try again in a few minutes

Browser Issues

Try a Different Browser

If uploads consistently fail in one browser, try another:

  • **Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge** are all fully supported
  • Make sure your browser is up to date

Clear Browser Cache

Old cached data can sometimes cause upload issues:

  1. Open browser settings
  2. Clear cache and cookies
  3. Refresh the page
  4. Try uploading again

Disable Interfering Extensions

Ad blockers and privacy extensions can sometimes block file uploads. Try disabling them temporarily.

Retrying the Upload

After addressing the issue:

  1. Go to **Your Documents** or the page where you initiated the upload
  2. Click the upload area or **Browse** button
  3. Select your file and try again
  4. Watch for the progress indicator to confirm the upload is working

Still Not Working?

If you've tried everything and uploads still fail:

  • Try uploading from a **different device** (computer vs. phone)
  • Email the document to **support@filejoy.com** and we can assist with manual entry
  • You can always **enter information manually** instead of uploading
