State Tax Returns
How to add state returns, understand state-specific rules, and manage multi-state filing.
Not every state has an income tax. Nine states have no state income tax at all: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (limited to interest/dividends), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. If you only lived and worked in one of these states, you typically don't need to file a state return.
For all other states, you generally need to file if you: β’ Lived in the state during the tax year β’ Earned income in the state (even if you live elsewhere) β’ Received income from a business operating in the state
If you moved between states or worked remotely for an out-of-state employer, you may need to file in multiple states. FileJoy helps you figure out exactly where you need to file.

Pro Tip
Even in no-income-tax states, you may need to file if you have business income sourced there. When in doubt, add the state and FileJoy will tell you if a return is needed.
