Accepted File Formats

FileJoy supports the following file types for document uploads:

PDF (.pdf)

  • **Recommended** for best AI scanning accuracy
  • Original digital PDFs work better than scanned printouts
  • Multi-page PDFs are supported
  • Must not be password-protected

PNG (.png)

  • Good for screenshots and document scans
  • Supports high resolution images
  • Best when the document has clear, dark text on a light background

JPG / JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)

  • Great for photos taken with your phone
  • Use your phone's document scanning mode for best results
  • Avoid heavy compression (keep quality high)

CSV (.csv)

  • Useful for importing bank statements and transaction data
  • Headers should clearly label each column
  • UTF-8 encoding recommended

File Size Limit

The maximum file size is 10MB per file. If your file is larger than this:

  • Try compressing the image (reduce resolution slightly)
  • Split multi-page PDFs into smaller files
  • Use a PDF compression tool

Tips for Best Scanning Results

Getting the most out of FileJoy's AI scanning starts with a quality upload. Here's how to ensure the best results:

Taking Photos of Documents

  • **Good lighting** — Use natural light or a bright lamp, aimed evenly across the document
  • **Flat document** — Place the paper on a flat, solid-colored surface (dark background for white paper)
  • **All corners visible** — Ensure the entire document is in the frame with a small margin
  • **Hold steady** — Keep your phone directly above the document, not at an angle
  • **No shadows** — Make sure your hand or phone isn't casting a shadow

Using Your Phone's Scanner

Most phones have a built-in document scanning mode in the camera app. This automatically:

  • Detects the document edges
  • Corrects perspective distortion
  • Enhances contrast for readability
  • Saves as a clean PDF

This is the best way to digitize paper documents for upload to FileJoy.

Choosing the Right Format

  • **Tax forms (W-2, 1099, 1098):** PDF is ideal. If you received a digital copy, use that.
  • **Receipts:** Photo (JPG/PNG) is fine. Make sure the total amount and date are clear.
  • **Bank statements:** CSV if available from your bank, otherwise PDF.
