Updating your profile information

Where to Find Your Profile

Your profile and household information live in the Settings section of FileJoy. To get there:

  1. Click **Settings** in the left sidebar
  2. Select **Household**

Here you'll see all the people in your household and can make changes as needed.

Editing Family Members

Changing a Name

If someone's name has changed (marriage, legal name change), update it immediately to avoid IRS rejections:

  1. Click on the person's name in the Household list
  2. Update the **first name**, **middle name**, or **last name** fields
  3. Click **Save**

Important: The name on your return must match exactly what the Social Security Administration has on file. If you've legally changed your name, update your Social Security card first, then update FileJoy.

Updating Date of Birth

Click on the person's profile and edit the Date of Birth field. This matters for age-based calculations like the Child Tax Credit (child must be under 17) and retirement contribution catch-up limits (age 50+).

Updating a Social Security Number

If you entered an SSN incorrectly:

  1. Click on the person's profile
  2. Click the **Edit** button next to the SSN field
  3. Enter the correct SSN
  4. Confirm and save

For security, the full SSN is never displayed—only the last 4 digits are shown.

Adding a Spouse

If you got married during the year or need to add your spouse:

  1. Go to **Settings > Household**
  2. Click **Add Member**
  3. Select the role **Spouse**
  4. Fill in their full legal name, date of birth, and SSN
  5. Save

Adding a spouse allows you to choose Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately as your filing status.

Adding or Removing Dependents

Adding a Dependent

  1. Go to **Settings > Household**
  2. Click **Add Member**
  3. Select the role **Dependent**
  4. Enter their full name, date of birth, SSN, and relationship to you
  5. Save

Removing a Dependent

If a dependent no longer qualifies (aged out, no longer living with you):

  1. Click on the dependent's profile
  2. Click **Remove Member**
  3. Confirm the removal

Note: Removing a dependent from your household will affect credits and deductions on any in-progress returns.

Household Roles

  • **Primary Taxpayer** — You, the main filer on the return
  • **Spouse** — Your legally married partner
  • **Dependent** — A qualifying child or relative you support

Tips

  • Update your household at the start of each tax season to reflect any life changes
  • Always verify SSNs match Social Security cards before filing
  • If you and your spouse have different last names, that's fine—just make sure each name matches their respective Social Security card
