Income Disappeared or Looks Wrong?
If income you entered isn't showing up on your return or the numbers don't match, here's how to track down the issue.
Check the Correct Tax Year
This is the number one cause of "missing" income. FileJoy organizes everything by tax year, and it's easy to accidentally add data to the wrong year.
How to Verify
- Look at the **tax year selector** at the top of the page
- Confirm it shows the year you're working on (e.g., **2025**)
- If it shows a different year, switch to the correct one
If you entered income in the wrong year, you'll need to delete it from that year and re-enter it in the correct one.
Verify Income Was Saved
Sometimes entries are started but not saved. If you navigated away before clicking Save, the data may not have been recorded.
How to Check
- Go to **Income** in the left sidebar
- Click through each section (W-2 wages, Self-employment, Interest & investments, Other income)
- Look for the entry you expected to see
- If it's missing, re-enter it and make sure to click **Save**
Check Person Assignment
If you're filing jointly, each income entry is assigned to a specific person (you or your spouse). If income was assigned to the wrong person, it might not appear where you expect.
How to Fix
- Open the income entry
- Check the **"Whose income is this?"** field
- Change it to the correct person if needed
- Save
Rescan Documents
If you uploaded a document and the AI extraction didn't capture the income correctly:
- Go to **Your Documents**
- Find the document in question
- Click **Rescan** to re-run the AI extraction
- Review the new results and make corrections
Alternatively, you can enter the information manually by going to the relevant income section and adding it by hand.
Dashboard vs. Detailed View
The dashboard shows a summary of your income. For the full picture:
- Click **Review** in the sidebar
- Select the **Audit** tab
- Review the income section for a complete line-by-line breakdown
This will show you exactly what's being reported and where each number comes from.
Common Scenarios
"I added a W-2 but my income went down"
Check if you accidentally deleted or overwrote a previous W-2 entry. Also verify the amounts—if you re-uploaded a document, the AI may have created a new entry while the old one was removed.
"My self-employment income isn't showing"
Make sure you created a Schedule C business first. Self-employment income must be associated with a business entry to appear on your return.
"Interest or dividend income is missing"
Check the Interest & investments section specifically. Small amounts sometimes feel "lost" in the total but are actually there—check the Audit page for details.
Tips
- Always click **Save** after entering data—don't just navigate away
- Use the Audit page for the most accurate, detailed view of your return
- If income truly seems lost, try clearing your browser cache and refreshing
- Contact support if you've tried everything and data is still missing
