Why Returns Get Rejected
The IRS may reject an e-filed return for various reasons. Don't worry—this is common and usually easy to fix. Your return isn't final until it's accepted.
Common Rejection Reasons
Identity Verification Issues
Incorrect SSN or Name
- Social Security numbers must match IRS records exactly
- Names must match your Social Security card
- Check for typos or transposed digits
Prior Year AGI Mismatch
- The IRS uses last year's AGI to verify your identity
- If you filed jointly last year, both AGIs may be needed
- If you didn't file last year, enter $0
IP PIN Issues
- If you have an Identity Protection PIN, it must be entered correctly
- IP PINs change each year
- Request a new IP PIN from irs.gov if you lost yours
Dependent Issues
Dependent Already Claimed
- Someone else may have already claimed your dependent
- Only one taxpayer can claim each dependent
- Check with ex-spouses or other family members
SSN Already Used
- A dependent's SSN may have been used on another return
- This often happens in custody situations
Other Common Issues
- Missing or incorrect employer EIN
- Math errors (though FileJoy catches most of these)
- Incorrect bank routing/account numbers
- State return rejected (different from federal)
How to Fix a Rejected Return
Step 1: Read the Rejection Notice
FileJoy shows you the specific error code and description. Common codes include:
- **IND-031**: SSN/Name mismatch
- **IND-510**: Prior year AGI mismatch
- **IND-516**: IP PIN incorrect
- **SEIC-F1040-501**: Dependent already claimed
Step 2: Make Corrections
Based on the error:
- Go to the relevant section of your return
- Update the incorrect information
- Double-check all related fields
Step 3: Re-submit
After making corrections:
- Go to **File Your Return**
- Review your return again
- Submit for e-filing
You can usually re-submit the same day.
What If I Can't Fix It?
Dependent Disputes
If someone else claimed your dependent incorrectly:
- File a paper return (mail it in)
- The IRS will investigate and contact both parties
- Whoever has the legal right to claim the dependent will prevail
Identity Verification Failures
If AGI or identity verification keeps failing:
- Request a Self-Select PIN from the IRS
- Or file a paper return
